“Maps – We can create” – my favorite album lately.
It’s this kind of music which gives me a creeps everytime I hear it.
UK has so many great bands in this sort of music, if I only mention the most popular ones: Radiohead, Coldplay, Blur, Oasis and now this.
I was pretty sure that Flaming Lips are British as well, and the fact that they will play in my city soon only confirmed my belief, but surprisingly they are from the US.
Short story about this record.
Recorded on a 16-track in James Chapman’s tiny bedroom, MAPS’ debut album WE CAN CREATE is a hugely ambitious, widescreen and epic record that recalls everything from far away electronics and skewed songwriting to euphoric sound-scapes. A work of heartstopping extremes, the album’s eleven tracks run the full length of the transmission spectrum, from dreamy space-rock to folksy, downtempo whisperings and clattering, thudding noise- pop. A bedroom genius in the truest of senses, the other-worldly atmospherics of MAPS are even more amazing for the fact he recorded the whole album without computers, preferring the painstaking process of splicing sounds together.
Here is a small sample, song titled “Don’t fear”. Enjoy!
Purely beautiful song, pity that the sound quality is not too good, but try to enjoy it anyway.
Nine Inch Nails – “The Great Below”
Staring at the sea
Will she come?
Is there hope for me
After all is said and done
Anything at any price
All of this for you
All the spoils of a wasted life
All of this for you
All the world has closed her eyes
Tried faith all worn and thin
For all we could have done
And all that could have been
Ocean pulls me close
And whispers in my ear
The destiny I’ve chose
All becoming clear
The currents have their say
The time is drawing near
Washes me away
Makes me disappear
I descend from grace
In arms of undertow
I will take my place
In the great below
As I’m here (in Ireland), I think it become me to use an opportunity, and finally get some paper proving my english skills .
CAE is far out of my range, but FCE seems to be possible to pass.
So tomorrow is my first lesson. Calan method, teacher is a native speaker of course, so even though I won’t succeed in getting FCE, that time won’t be wasted.
